First Day of Fall
I drove up to Colorado, as I had so many times before, after work and into the evening. Up through the San Luis Valley, into the San Juans, and along a 30-mile stretch of dirt road into the heart of the mountains. Late into September, it was dark for the last couple hours of the drive, but the road was in good shape, and I easily found the trailhead. There was nobody else around, and probably nobody around for dozens of miles. I was planning for a hike up San Luis Peak in the morning, so I put the seats in my 4Runner down, laid out the sleeping bag, grabbed a book, and eventually drifted off to sleep. When I woke in the morning, this was the sight the greeted me. I love the fall.
